Introduction

Recognising the potential of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) to promote awareness and education on human rights, Equitas has developed a special program aimed at the creation and strengthening of independent and effective NHRIs in conformity with the Paris Principles. The Equitas National Institutions Program involves education and training initiatives designed to strengthen the capacity of these institutions to promote and protect human rights. During the past eight years, Equitas has worked with a number of NHRIs and NGOs in Asia, as well as with the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Towards Social Justice in Nepal: Building the Capacity of the National Human Rights Commission to Protect and Promote Economic, Social and Cultural Rights

This project is aimed at building the capacity of the National Human Rights Commission of Nepal to protect and promote economic, social and cultural (ESC) rights in the country. In particular, the project aims to strengthen the capacity of the NHRC and selected stakeholders (including government officials, NGOs and other members of civil society) to: analyze issues involving ESC rights; monitor and document the ESC rights situation in all regions of the country; investigate and respond effectively to ESC rights-based complaints and issues; promote awareness of ESC rights; advocate for the protection of ESC rights; effectively use existing promotion and protection mechanisms at both the national and international levels to address ESC rights issues; and develop and strengthen national networks among the various stakeholders to address ESC rights issues in the country.

Complementing this project is a workshop on human rights education and promotion (a training of trainers in the context of ESC rights, as well as in the context of a conflict situation), which will be conducted for the staff of the NHRC of Nepal.
