Introduction

Equitas has made an important contribution to the growth of the Indonesian human rights movement since Indonesians first began attending our International Human Rights Training Program (IHRTP) in 1995. Beginning from a series of training of trainers workshops with the National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) in 1997, our involvement in Indonesia has expanded to encompass a strong network of partnerships and relationships with civil society and government institutions alike across the country. Since 1997, our activities in the region have created important spaces for civil society and government to come together, explore common problems and develop common solutions based on human rights norms.

Strengthening Human Rights Protection in the Tsunami-affected Regions of Indonesia

This project is designed to respond to the urgent challenges facing Indonesia in consolidating the transition to democracy as well as the long-term challenges facing Aceh in the aftermath of the Tsunami. Project activities will engage Canadian expertise in strengthening the capacity of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights' (MOLAHR) Directorate General for Human Rights Protection (DG HAM) and its partner agencies in the affected provinces to integrate human rights concepts and approaches into their reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts. The project's emphasis on participation, transparency, accountability and the protection of vulnerable groups will contribute to improved governance at the national and provincial levels.

The project objectives are:
  • To reinforce the capacity of DG HAM to engage in human rights training and capacity-building programs within the context of the Indonesian National Plan of Action on Human Rights 2004-2009 (RANHAM)
  • To strengthen the capacity of DG HAM and its partners in the national and provincial RANHAM Committees to implement the RANHAM at the provincial level, with a particular emphasis on the provinces affected by the Tsunami.
  • To provide Canadian expertise in the area of human rights education and protection with important actors engaged in implementing the RANHAM.
  • To raise awareness of Canadians about human rights issues in Indonesia in the aftermath of the Tsunami.
