The Play It Fair Toolkit is at the heart of a project conducted in partnership by Equitas with the City of Montreal since 2004 and with municipal and community based organizations in Vancouver, Toronto, Winnipeg and Moncton/Dieppe/Fredericton since 2006. The goal of the project is to develop sustainable strategies to promote inclusion, human rights, anti-discrimination, harmonious intercultural relations, and peaceful conflict resolution in existing education programs for children. This goal will be achieved by integrating non-formal human rights education and multicultural training and resources into community based endeavours focussing on children, specifically summer camps.

The Play It Fair Toolkit is user-friendly and includes ideas for games and activities as well as instructions for their use. This Toolkit focuses on a rights-based approach to anti-discrimination and equips the staff of the camps with the knowledge and skills to promote the values of human rights, inclusion and cultural harmony in the activities they organize with campers aged 6-12 years old. Play It Fair Toolkit available in English and French, includes:

  • Games and activities that can be used at any point during the day camp program;
  • Basic information on human rights, anti-discrimination and cultural diversity;
  • Techniques for teaching human rights and creating an inclusive and accepting environment in the camp;
  • Problem-solving and conflict-resolution techniques for addressing issues which may arise in the camp;
  • Programming ideas for organizing series of activities around specific themes related to human rights, anti-discrimination and cultural diversity.

Based on the evaluation of the implementation of the project in 2006 in the City of Montreal’s summer camps and on the findings of the needs assessment studies conducted in Vancouver, Toronto, Winnipeg and Moncton / Dieppe/ Fredericton, a number of new games and materials for the Play It Fair Toolkit have been developed.

To complement this Toolkit, you can download an overview, as well as an orientation guide, training manuals and a presentation designed to sensitize camp and city personnel on the values promoted in the ToolKit and to facilitate its use.

Additional new games and Mini games are also available to download. These games were developed in 2007 to complement the existing material in the Toolkit.
